The Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County (WSACC), along with longtime project partners Crowder Construction and Brown and Caldwell, recently took time away from their daily work on the Rocky River Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Project to give back to the community they’ve been serving for years.
The idea started with Daniel Passione of Crowder Construction, who wanted to find a way for the project partners to do something meaningful together for the local community. He reached out to WSACC’s Robin Moore, who made a connection with WeBuild Concord, a local nonprofit focused on affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization. Through that partnership, the group identified two local homeowners who needed some help with yard improvements and exterior repairs.
“Everyone was immediately on board,” said Robin. “We’ve worked together for years on the wastewater project, so it was special to channel that teamwork into something else that directly impacts residents in the community in a meaningful way.”
Over two days, volunteers from WSACC, Crowder Construction, and Brown and Caldwell worked together to complete a range of home improvement projects. The team installed two new utility sheds, donated by Crowder and Brown and Caldwell, and painted them to match the homes. They also stained decks, cleaned up yards, and made general landscaping improvements to enhance curb appeal and create a safer, more enjoyable outdoor space for the homeowners. “Working side by side outside our usual roles fostered a real sense of camaraderie among the team,” said Duncan Lozinski, Brown and Caldwell, “everyone was proud of the work they did, and of course, there was some friendly banter on which team had painted the best looking shed and deck!”
To ensure the homeowners could maintain their yards over time, several vendors who work with Crowder stepped up with generous donations. City Electric Supply provided lawnmowers and weed eaters, Moore’s Grading donated gardening tools, and Sherwin-Williams contributed paint and stain. WSACC also provided lunch for volunteers during the workdays.
Daniel was even able to secure two sheds from local suppliers and personally helped coordinate the delivery and setup. “The response from everyone was incredible,” he said. “Every partner wanted to pitch in and make sure these families had the tools and resources they needed to keep things looking great long-term. We take great pride in the dedication our companies show in supporting and strengthening the local communities where we operate.”
Patrick Graham, Executive Director of WeBuild Concord, whose mission is to create safe, affordable, and equitable housing across the city, expressed gratitude for the volunteers’ time and effort.
“Partnerships like this show what happens when organizations come together to serve,” Patrick said. “These improvements may seem small, but they help families take pride in their homes and strengthen the entire neighborhood.”
What began as a simple idea to give back turned into a powerful example of what collaboration can achieve. The same teamwork that drives the Rocky River Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Project now extends beyond the construction site—into the heart of the community it serves.
WSACC is proud to partner with organizations that share its commitment to service, sustainability, and community. Together, these teams are building more than infrastructure. They’re building a stronger Cabarrus County.
